Alert Basics

Alert Definitions are first created by a given User using the “Alerts Grid” dashboard component. Once an Alert Definition is created and is being evaluated (per the Alert properties configuration) and distributed (per the Distribution configuration in Admin web app), Alert Messages will begin to be generated. These resultant Alert Messages can then be seen using the “Alert Messages Grid” dashboard component.

If “No Authentication” is being used, then all Alert Definitions and Alert Messages can be seen by all Users.

If any other form of User Authentication is being used, then filtering will be applied to Alert Definitions and Alert Messages, which will affect what Users can see on the dashboard.

Alert Definitions

Visibility of Alert Definitions is controlled by the following factor:

User Filters – when a User creates a new Alert Definition, part of the definition includes all of the User Filter values associated with that User. These settings are created automatically by the system, and the Alert creator has no control over this. In order for any other User to then be able to see that Alert Definition, they must also have some “intersection” of User Filter values when they log in to Insight.

For example if User1 creates an Alert Definition with UserFilter1 values of A, B, and C, then User2 who has UserFilter1 values of C, D, and E will still be able to see the Alert Definition (since they share the value of C). User3 who has UserFilter1 values of D, E, and F will NOT be able to see the Alert Definition since there are no common values.

Note that the Alert Definition creator/owner can always see their own Alert Definitions, regardless of their User Filter values.

Alert Messages

Visibility of Alert Messages is controlled by the following factor:

Role Membership – when a User creates a new Alert Definition, part of the definition may include Delivery to one or more Roles. In order for any other User to then be able to see any Alert Messages generated by that Alert Definition, they must be a member of one or more of these same Roles.
