Question / Problem:
When attempting to install Kofax Capture on a Windows 7 Ultimate system, the installation process fails immediately with the following message:
“Operating System Update Required.
Kofax Capture requires Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows 2008 Service Pack 1 (or later). Please upgrade your operating system and run the installation program again.”
What may be causing this message?
Answer / Solution:
This message can be related to the system’s Windows Compatibility Mode feature, in particular, existing values that are written to the associated Registry Hive when attempting to run a Capture installation in compatibility mode with a “Run as Administrator” user reference. This is a default feature installed by the Windows operating system.
In the scenario above, the following values have been found under the Registry Hive:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers\ "SIGN.MEDIA=14255A AutoRun.exe"="VISTARTM" "SIGN.MEDIA=23298A0A Kofax Capture\\setup.exe"="VISTARTM" "C:\\Program Files\\Kofax\\Capture\\ImgCtls\\bin\\Vrs.ScanApp.Admin.exe"="RUNASADMIN"
Performing a backup of the above Registry Key and deleting the Kofax-related values should resolve this issue.
NOTE: It has subsequently been observed that backing up the above Registry Key and deleting the Kofax- related values has also resolved this issue for a Kofax Capture 10.2 installation on Windows 7 SP1, so this process is likely applicable for various Capture and Windows versions as well.
