Issue

What does DBUtil - compacting pair and repair do and when should this run?

Solution

Kofax Capture uses SQL Express for its primary database.

Kofax Capture can also use MS Access for individual batches in the system depending if you select storage batches in SQL from within DBUTIL.

For all databases routine maintenance is required and can be carried out by Dbutil or for External SQL by an SQL Administrator.

The Repair and Compact tab within DBUtil allows you to repair and compact selected Kofax Capture databases. Repairing restores the internal consistency of a database. Compacting permanently destroys records marked by Kofax Capture as deleted in the database and reorganizes the contents of the database, and may save some disk space.

The following SQL commands maintenance commands are executed:

Repair:

DBCC CHECKDB (<DB_Name>, REPAIR_REBUILD)

Compact:

DBCC SHRINKDATABASE (<DB_Name>)

NOTE: These tasks require EXCLUSIVE access to the database, so all Kofax related services need to be stopped, except the Kofax Capture service, and all users must be out of the Kofax Capture related modules. If you have KCNS, then this must be disabled first. You may re-enable the KCNS service once these tasks are completed.
