Bad file name or number error scanning 2 or more pages from a Windows 10 Capture Workstation to the CaptureSV Images folder
Issue
Scanning 2 or more pages from a Windows 10 Kofax Capture Workstation to the Images folder on the Capture Share results in the error
Bad file name or number
Cause
This issue is caused by a racing condition in the way Kofax ImageControls saves the image files. The racing condition is triggered by Windows Defender or other Security software attempting to open the image file while it is still being saved to the disk.
Solution
This issue has been resolved in Fix Pack 5 and higher for Kofax VRS 5.2.
To resolve this issue:
- If Kofax VRS 5.1.x is installed on the scan station, install Kofax VRS 5.2
- Install the latest Fix Pack for Kofax VRS 5.2
Alternate Solution
Even if Windows Defender is not the primary Antivirus Software running on the system, it has been so deeply integrated into Windows 10 that it may be running in the background as part of the operating system. To confirm whether or not Defender is running in the background, run the following command in an elevated command prompt:
sc query windefend
The results will report the service is either in the RUNNING
state or the STOPPED
state.
To implement the alternate solution:
- Add the paths indicated in the following Knowledge Base article to the Windows Defender Security Center Exclusions list on the Capture Server and each Capture Workstation:
Best Practices for configuring Kofax folder exclusions from scanning by antivirus monitoring and other 3rd party software
- Add an exclusion to the Windows Defender Security Center Exclusions list for the .TIF file extension on the Capture Server and each Capture Workstation
