Access Database directly from SBL Validation Script

QAID # 9257 Published

Question / Problem:

Is it possible to access a database directly from within a Validation (Index) or Recognition Script?

Answer / Solution:

The Softbridge Basic Language (SBL) script provides the ability to access a database directly through ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) using a System DSN as a data source.

SBL provides several functions for accessing a SQL database:

SQLClose(connection&)

SQLError(destination())

SQLExecQuery(connection&, query$)

SQLGetSchema(connection, action%, qualifier$, ref())

SQLOpen(connectStr$, outputStr$, prompt%)

SQLRequest(connectionStr$, query$, outputStr$, prompt%, columnNames%, ref())

SQLRetrieve(connection&, destination(), maxColumns%, maxRows%, columnNames%, _
            rowNumbers%, fetchFirst%)

SQLRetrieveToFile(connection&, destination$, columnNames%, columnDelimiter$)

These are covered in greater detail, including sample code, in the online help available within the SBL Editor (Help ¦ Basic Reference…). They include functions to open and establish communications with a database, manipulate/update/retrieve information from the database, and close the session or database connection.
