Microsoft end of support for Basic Authentication access
Issue
Failure to connect to office365 through IMAP.
We are now unable to import mail messages in to KIC with error:
Connection to IMAP mailbox on outlook.office365.com cannot be established.
Error message:TCP connect to 'outlook.office365.com' failed with error 10060
Cause
Microsoft begins ceasing support for basic authentication October 1, 2022. You can no longer use basic authentication in Exchange Online for any of the following:
- Exchange ActiveSync (EAS)
- POP
- IMAP
- Remote PowerShell
- Exchange Web Services (EWS)
- Offline Address Book (OAB)
- Outlook for Windows and Mac
- SMTP AUTH will also be disabled on all accounts that are not using it.
For more information, see the Microsoft technical support documentation.
Solution
Though this change took effect in October 2022, basic authentication can be re-enabled for a one time extension until the end of the year, thus providing extra time to configure new methods. Basic Authentication Deprecation in Exchange Online – September 2022 Update - Microsoft Tech Community
IMAP still works for an on-premise Exchange.
To use IMAP to connect to O365 it would be best for him to start using MSGraph.
In order to use IMAP or POP with OAuth for connecting to O365, KIC should be upgraded to KIC 2.10.
In case IMAP or POP is used to connect to a local/on-premise exchange, no need update.
