Issue
-) Corrupt LS1 image and config after changing IP via RLA and restarting.
Scenario
Last week the following scenario was brought to our attention:
A LS1 needed a new IP address because it had to be moved to another datacenter.
The IP was changed via the Remote Lineserver Administration (RLA) and after saving the config and rebooting the LS1, the LS1 was unplugged and shipped to the new location.
At the new location the LS1 was plugged in but it failed to boot.
The display only showed "IP not set up".
The only way to recover from this state was by reconfiguring and re-flashing the LS1 with the Line Server Diagnostics (LSD) tool. (physical access + connection via COM port necessary).
Reproduction Steps
This is how the issue might occur and how we were able to reproduce it in house with some LS1s:
- Open Remote LS1 Admin (RLA)
- Change the IP Address
- Click 'Save and Reboot'
- Check the display of the LS1 and be ready to switch off (remove the power) the LS1.
- Power Off the LS1 as soon as you see "Ready for connections" or "Waiting for Topcall server"
- Power on the LS1 again.
- Notice the error 'IP not set up' on the display of the LS1.
The only way to recover from this error is via the LSD tool (connection via COM port necessary)
First configure the LS1 with the desired settings and subsequently install the latest system image.
For this issue the following bug was created:
Bug 839045: Corrupt LS1 image and config after changing IP via RLA and restarting.
Solution
We can offer the following recommendations.
- Don't turn off the LS1 too quickly. Once you see the "Ready for connections" or "Waiting for Topcall server" message, give the LS1 another minute before pulling the plug.
After pulling the plug see if the LS1 can still be booted before you ship it to a remote location.
A second recommended way to change the configuration of the LS1 via the RLA:
- Don't click “Save and Reboot” but click "Save and Reboot as TestRun" after making your configuration changes.
Use the RLA to confirm your configuration changes.
