FATAL ERROR IOL2100: Failed to memory map file file_path. The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid

Issue

When generating a document you receive the following error from KCM:

FATAL ERROR IOL2100: Failed to memory map file C:\KCM\Work\5.3\Instance_01\core\Temp\Hostname\ITPDP [core_01_5.3] #1\ITPTemp\styles\Example-pagestyle-Document.docx: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid Contact your sales representative.

Cause

This error occurs when a 0 kb file is used as pagestyle document or stylesheet document. It is possible to create such a document when you create a new pagestyle document in Designer and immediately unlock it. In this scenario the pagestyle document is a 0 kb file which is completely empty. Before a new pagestyle document can be used, it must first be opened for editing and then saved.

Solution

You can recognize the problematic document by carefully reading the filename in the error message. The document name always has the construct: <brand>-<document type>-<document name>.docx. For example if the brand is DKC Blue, the document type is a pagestyle document and the document name is Letter, then the name in the error message is: "DKC Blue-pagestyle-Letter.docx".

In the example error in the section Issue, the name of the document is Example-pagestyle-Document.docx. This means you must edit the pagestyle document Document.docx in brand Example in Designer.

To resolve your problem

1. Login Designer
2. Open for editing the stylesheet or pagestyle document mentioned in the error message.
3. Make a small edit and save and close the document.
4. Unlock the document and promote it to the desired status.
