Saving .doc templates with Microsoft Word 2016 causes compilation error
Issue
Saving a .doc master template or include document with Microsoft Word 2016 causes compilation (Create Master Template) errors in CCM Designer.
Example of a possible error message is:
TEXT pagestyle :(*** WARNING: PAR4299; Ignoring symbol ':' here. ***) =(*** ERROR: PAR4242; Parse error (syntax error) just before '='. Please correct error(s). ***) "Normal"
It appears that the compiler does not recognize particular text, as if an invisible marker interferes.
Cause
A recent update released for Microsoft Office 2016 (monthly channel) has an effect on how .doc documents are saved. As a result the compiler in CCM Designer cannot always process these documents correctly and will provide an error when creating the master template.
The following Microsoft Word 2016 releases are affected from the "monthly" channel:
- Version 1810 (Build 11001.20108), Release date November 13 2018
- Version 1810 (Build 11001.20074), Release date October 29, 2018
Solution
This issue is resolved in fix pack 1 for Kofax Cujstomer Communications Manager (KCCM) 5.2.0 (5.2.0.1). You can download this fix pack from the downloads section on this portal. Upgrade to KCCM 5.2.0 and apply fix pack 1 to resolve your issue. Alternatively, upgrade to KCM 5.3 or newer.
Workaround
Older releases and the (targeted) semi-annual update channel are not affected. Possible workarounds for this issue are:
Switch from 'monthly channel' to semi-annual channel
Where the monthly channels provides users with new features immediately, the semi-annual channel provides users with new features of Office only a few times a year. To switch from monthly channel to semi-annual channel, please refer to the following link for larger deployments:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/Dep...r-click-to-run
To switch to semi-annual channel for a single installation:
- Open command prompt as administrator
- Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun
- OfficeC2RClient.exe /changesetting Channel=Deferred
- OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user
- After the updater completed, Microsoft Word has switched to semi-annual channel.
The semi-annual channel is not affected at this moment of writing (Nov. 23rd, 2018).
Use an older Microsoft Word version
Microsoft Word 2013 and earlier are not affected. It is possible to uninstall Microsoft Word 2016 and reinstall Microsoft 2013. If you perform this task on the machine where KCCM is installed, then you must perform the following additional tasks.
- Reboot the machine after installing Microsoft Office.
- After the reboot, log in with the CCM services account and start Microsoft Word once.
If Microsoft Word 2013 or earlier is available on a machine from where CCM Designer cannot be accessed, you have the possibility to use the lock & download feature of CCM Designer for Web. With the lock & download feature, the master template (or include document) is locked for editing and a copy is downloaded. After editing the document on a machine with an earlier Word version, it is possible to upload the document back to Designer for Web. The lock & download feature is introduced in KCCM 5.1.0.
Level of Complexity
Easy (applying the fix pack), Moderate (apply the workaround)
