PDFProFiltSrv.exe, NuanceWDS.exe and Microsoft Windows Desktop Search

PDFProFiltSrv.exe, NuanceWDS.exe and Microsoft Windows Desktop Search

Information:

Microsoft Windows Desktop Search (WDS) is a free desktop search utility from Microsoft for users with Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1. WDS functionality is built into Windows Vista and Windows 7. See www.microsoft.com for more details.

PDF Converter Professional augments the Microsoft Windows Desktop Search (WDS) by enabling the search of text in PDF files from WDS.

This functionality is integrated using the PDFProFiltSrv.exe which is added to the Windows Startup upon installation of PDF Converter Professional. When the PDFProFiltSrv.exe detects that Windows Desktop is installed it launches the NuanceWDS.exe process.

Some users may report that the NuanceWDS.exe process consumes a large amount of available system resources. This can be expected the first time the process runs as it indexes the PDF files on the system for use by WDS.

To prevent the NuanceWDS.exe process from running on systems where Microsoft Windows Desktop Search is installed, please use the following steps:

  1. Click Start > Run (XP/2003) or click the Windows Start button and type Run into the "Start Search" field, followed by the ENTER key (Vista and 7).
  2. Type msconfig and click "OK".
  3. Click the Services tab.
  4. Locate PDFProFiltSrv in the list of processes and clear the check box to disable it.
  5. Click "OK" to apply the changes, then restart the computer when prompted.

The PDFProFiltSrv.exe process will no longer run at startup which will prevent the NuanceWDS.exe from running should WDS be installed.
