How To Change Default File Associations for PDF Converter

Article # 3016362 - Page views: 1431

PDF Converter uses the file associations provided in the registry to determine which program is used to convert/print the input document format (.txt/.tiff/.jpg) into the output document (.pdf).ᅠIn some cases, the default program does not convert the document properly or will fail to convert the document. This article describes how to change this default program for use with the PDF Converter.

Steps and Instructions

See the steps below to change file associations, which are used in any PDF Converter output. The file association will depend on the file type being imported (.txt, .doc, .tiff, etc.)

This is the registry location for File Associations (open/edit/print): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations

The File Associations are applied globally to all users, including system and service accounts.

To set the Notepad settings (or any other Software settings) for the LOCAL SYSTEM user profile, change the registry keys at HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\ instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\. Included below is a real-world example of a change that would require the above settings.

Icon Tip: If the directories do not exist you will have to create them.

Changing the default print program for .txt files to Notepad:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.txt\shell\print\command

Name: (default)

Type: REG_SZ

Data/Value: "%systemroot%\system32\notepad.exe" "%1"

Changing Irfan Viewer to the default printing application for TIFF images (Download TIFF 64-bit.reg.txt)

@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\IrfanView\\i_view32.exe\" \"%1\""

@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\IrfanView\\i_view32.exe\" \"%1\" /print"

@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\IrfanView\\i_view32.exe\" \"%1\" /print"
