How to adjust the number of thumbnails displayed on the PaperPort Desktop

Information:

When PaperPort is opened or a new folder is displayed in the Folder Pane, thumbnail files will load and be displayed on the PaperPort Desktop.  If a large number of thumbnails are being loaded when a certain folder is displayed, it may cause the program to slow down.  By default, PaperPort will load up to 1000 thumbnails in a folder before automatically switching to the Details view. Loading this many thumbnails at a time may cause issues with PaperPort on certain computers.

To reduce the number of thumbnails that are displayed on the PaperPort Desktop, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch PaperPort.
  2. Click "Desktop -> Desktop Options".
  3. Change the "Switch to Details view if there are more than X items in a folder" option to a lower value (such as 50).
  4. Click "OK" to apply the changes.

If the above steps cannot be followed because PaperPort will not launch, follow the steps below to adjust this value outside of the program:

IMPORTANT: The steps below contain information about editing the system registry. Before editing the registry, make sure a backup exists and that it can be restored should a problem occur when performing the steps listed in the solution. Please follow the steps below to create a backup of the registry:

  1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking "Start" and placing the cursor in the Start Search field (or click "Start -> Run).
  2. Type "regedit" without the quotation marks and click "OK".
  3. Export a backup of the registry by clicking " File -> Export".
  4. Save this file to the Windows Desktop and name the file "backup". (Keep "backup" for a few days and if there are no issues, then this file can be deleted.)

To reduce the number of thumbnails manually:

  1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking "Start" and placing the cursor in the Start Search field (or click "Start -> Run").
  2. Type "regedit" without the quotation marks and click "OK".
  3. Navigate the following registry key :
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ScanSoft\PaperPort\PaperPort User Preferences
  4. Double-click the "ItemCount" key on the right-side of the Registry Editor.
  5. Change the value to a low number, such as 20.
    • Note: This value is in a hexadecimal format, so a basic number value will be converted to hex to calculate the number of folders.
  6. Click "OK" to save the change.
  7. Attempt to launch PaperPort.
    • Note: To change the value back to 1000, modify the "ItemCount" value to "3e8", which is hexidecimal for 1000.
