Annotation Requires Imprinter in VRS 5.1.x

Question / Problem:

Annotation is enabled and configured in VRS 5.1.2 and earlier, but the scanned images are not digitally annotated when the scanner does not have a physical imprinter installed.

Answer / Solution:

Kofax VRS / ImageControls requires that a physical imprinter / endorser be installed in the scanner for annotation to occur.  This is due to the way in which the Annotation and Imprinter feature work together to ensure that the Imprinted value and Annotated values match.  The Imprinter prefix and starting counter value are pushed to the scanner from Kofax VRS / ImageControls.  The scanner interprets any codes included in the Imprinter prefix and handles the counter increment functionality.  The scanner includes the actual imprinted string value in the image metadata for each scanned image.  The Annotation feature reads the imprinted string value from the scanned image metadata and digitally annotates the image with that value.

If a physical imprinter / endorser is not installed in the scanner, the scanner will return a blank imprinted string value in the image metadata since it was unable to imprint anything on the page.  This leaves Annotation with no value to digitally annotate onto the image.
