Code 128 Bar Code Results Include FNC1 Character

Question / Problem:

Code 128 Bar Code results from the Standard Bar Code (SBC) engine include an extra [FNC1],  Ê, Ï , or ÷ character

Answer / Solution:

The Function Code 1 character is used in Code 128 bar codes to indicate that the code is a GS1-128 bar code.  This character is usually recognized as a Function Character and not returned in the bar code results.  However, if the bar code engine has been configured to encode the results using the ISO 8859-1 Latin 1 Western European character set, the FNC1 character may be returned in the bar code results as an Ê, Ï , or ÷

To hide the FNC1 character from the SBC Code 128 bar code results:

  1. On each station where bar code recognition will be performed, navigate to C:\ProgramData\Kofax\Vrs
  2. Create a new text file called KBarMode.ini (if one does not already exist)
  3. Open KBarMode.ini in a text editor such as Notepad
  4. Add the following lines (if they do not already exist):

Valid options for the IncludeFNC1 value are:

  • 0  (Includes the FNC1 character in the results)
  • 1  (Hides the FNC1 character from the results)

5. Save the changes to the KBarMode.ini

6. Restart all services and applications that use Kofax VRS / ImageControls.
