Question

What are the minimum bar code size requirements for the Kofax VRS / ImageControls Enhanced Bar Code (EBC) Engine?

 

Answer

The Enhanced Bar Code (EBC) Engine is capable of reading Linear (1D) bar codes and 2D bar codes in color, grayscale, and bitonal (black and white) images. The EBC engine is not as concerned with the overall size of the complete bar code as it is with the size of the individual elements (black and white bars in a linear bar code, or the cells/squares in a 2D bar code).

When scanning or importing Color and Grayscale images:

  • Linear bar codes (Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, Codabar, EAN, Interleaved 2 of 5, Linear 2 of 5, Postnet, UPC-A, UPC-E): The minimum supported width of the narrowest bar is 1.6 pixels.
  • PDF417 bar codes: The minimum supported width of the narrowest element is 1.4 pixels.
  • 2D bar codes (Aztec, Data Matrix, Maxicode, QR): The minimum supported width/height of each cell is 2.75 pixels.

When scanning or importing Bitonal images:

  • Linear bar codes (Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, Codabar, EAN, Interleaved 2 of 5, Linear 2 of 5, Postnet, UPC-A, UPC-E): The minimum supported width of the narrowest bar is 2.75 pixels.
  • PDF417 bar codes: The minimum supported width of the narrowest element is 2.5 pixels.
  • 2D bar codes (Aztec, Data Matrix, Maxicode, QR): The minimum supported width/height of each cell is 5 pixels.

 

Note-Icon.png The Kofax Capture Recognition Server module creates a temporary bitonal copy of color and grayscale images for the Enhanced Bar Code engine to read. Therefore, the bitonal minimum requirements apply to all images where bar code recognition is performed by the Kofax Capture Recognition Server module.
