Question / Problem:
How to convert a Standalone Kofax VRS 5.1.2 or 5.2 installation on a KTA scan station into a Client installation so that it pulls its licensing from the KTA License Server without having to install a VRS Server Installation.
Answer / Solution:
The Best Practice for installing Kofax VRS 5.1.2 or 5.2 on a KTA scan station so that it gets its VRS licensing from the KTA license is to install VRS as a server installation on the KTA license server and install VRS has a Client installation on the scan station. However, in cases where Kofax VRS 5.1.2 or 5.2 have already been installed on a fleet of scan stations as Standalone installations, and where VRS Profile Sharing is not required, the Standalone installations can be manually converted into a client installation and pointed to a KTA License Server.
A Kofax VRS Server installation performs two major functions: centralized VRS licensing using the Kofax License Service and VRS Profile Sharing using the VRS Repository Service. The procedure documented in this article does NOT provide VRS Profile Sharing. If VRS Profile Sharing is requierd, a server installation of VRS must be installed.
To convert the standalone installation of Kofax VRS into a Client and point it to the KTA License Server:
- Make sure that the scan station is able to communicate with the KTA license server on port 3581
- Stop the WebCapture Service to ensure that Kofax VRS is not still loaded
- Navigate to
- Create a new text file called
SALConfig.xmlin a text editor such as Notepad
- Enter the following into SALConfig.xml, replacing
mylicenseserver.mycompany.comwith the hostname, IP Address or Fully Qualified Domain Name of the KTA license server.
<licensing> <servers> <server port="3581" isEnterprise="False">mylicenseserver.mycompany.com</server> </servers> <opts> <delaySeconds>30</delaySeconds> <totalTimeoutSeconds>300</totalTimeoutSeconds> <useDefaultWebProxy>False</useDefaultWebProxy> <remoteSite>False</remoteSite> </opts> </licensing>
- Save the changes to
SALConfig.xmland close the file
KofaxReg.xmlin a text editor such as Notepad.
- Locate the
ORIGINALINSTALLTYPEvalues under Registry | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | KOFAX | VIRTUALRESCAN
<Registry> <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> <SOFTWARE> <KOFAX> <VIRTUALRESCAN> ... <INSTALLTYPE Value="Standalone" /> <ORIGINALINSTALLTYPE Value="Standalone" /> </VIRTUALRESCAN>
- Change the INSTALLTYPE and the ORIGINALINSTALLTYPE values to
<Registry> <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> <SOFTWARE> <KOFAX> <VIRTUALRESCAN> ... <INSTALLTYPE Value="Workstation" /> <ORIGINALINSTALLTYPE Value="Workstation" /> </VIRTUALRESCAN>
- Save the changes to
- Restart the WebCapture Service
