Bad Filename or Number Error 52 exporting TIF files to a network location
Issue
Exporting .TIF files to a network location from a Scanning Application using Kofax VRS results in the following error:
-52 Bad File Name or Number
Cause
A recent Windows 10 update, "Update for Windows Defender antimalware platform", causes Windows Defender to interfere with the way that Kofax VRS / ImageControls saves the scanned pages to network locations.
Solution
Add the following paths to the Windows Defender Security Center Exclusions list on the target image storage location Server and each Kofax VRS scan station:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Kofax\
- C:\ProgramData\Kofax\
- The parent directory of the target export location
- Any folders related to the scanning application (as recommended by the manufacturer of the scanning application)
- Add an exclusion to the Windows Defender Security Center Exclusions list for the .TIF file extension on the Capture Server and each Capture Workstation
This issue has been resolved in Fix Pack 5 and higher for Kofax VRS 5.2. While the Windows Defender exclusions are still recommended as a Best Practice, the Certified Solution for this issue is to upgrade to Kofax VRS 5.2.0.5 or higher.
